Takataka: Gurindji sign language posters

Gurindji sign language is used alongside a number of spoken languages in the main Gurindji communities of Kalkaringi and Daguragu in Northern Australia. This form of communication is known locally as Takataka (borrowed from Warlpiri rdakardaka ‘sign language’; rdaka ‘hand’), or in Kriol as bingka tok ‘finger talk’ (bingka ‘finger/hand’; tok ‘talk’). In 2017 four sign language posters were produced by Jennifer Green, Cassandra Algy and Felicity Meakins in partnership with Karungkarni Arts.

Links to the posters in this series: people, places and things, animals and hunting, and questions and actions.
